Track 06: 1st Reading: Wisdom 3:1-6,9 (Christine Asing)

Track 07: ? >

Christine: A reading from the book of Wisdom

1 1 [But] The souls of the just are in the hand of God, and no torment shall touch them. 2They seemed, in the view of the foolish, to be dead; and their passing away was thought an affliction 3and their going forth from us, utter destruction. But they are in peace. 4For if in the eyes of men, indeed, they be punished, yet is their hope full of immortality; 5Chastised a little, they shall greatly be blessed, because God tried them and found them worthy of himself. 6As gold in the furnace, he proved them, and as sacrificial offerings2 he took them to himself.

9Those who trust in him shall understand truth, and the faithful shall abide with him in love: Because grace and mercy are with his holy ones, and his care is with his elect.

Christine: The Word of the Lord
Congregation: Thanks be to God

Verses not read:

7In the time of their visitation3 they shall shine, and shall dart about as sparks through stubble; 8They shall judge nations and rule over peoples, and the LORD shall be their King forever.

Footnotes:

11-8 Verses frequently applied to the martyrs.

26 Offerings: the image is that of the holocaust, in which the victim is completely consumed by fire.

37 Visitation: God's loving judgment of those who have been faithful to him; the same word is used in Wisdom 14:11 for the punishment of the wicked at God's final judgment. Cf also Wisdom 3:13.

Notes:

The above is from the NAB (New American Bible, see the Wikipedia entry). I used the (aparently original) version available on the USCCB website, and modified for the changes from the (apparently later) version that was read ("before" -> "in the eyes of", "be greatly" -> "greatly be", "the elect" -> "his elect"). See the first note on Track 08: 2nd Reading: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 (Michelle Lopes Ford). See the USCCB version for hyperlinked footnotes. See also Wisdom 3 from the New Revised Standard Version

At first, I wasn't sure which translation was read from, and I'm still not completely sure if the transcript is accurate (because the same version isn't available online). Initially, the only translations I checked were the ones available on Crosswalk (see their table of translations available on Crosswalk.com that include the Apocryphal (Deuterocanonical) books). See also Crosswalk's description for the book of Wisdom (aka Wisdom of Solomon).

I will probably eventually create a brief summary page with comments and discussion about the Apocrypha. Until then, you can check out Crosswalk's Old Testament Apocryphal Writings page, and Wikipedia's Apocrypha entry (especially the first paragraph and the Apocryphal texts by denomination section), to learn more.
