Lyrics for Tracks 12 & 13: In the Garden (HYMN 242)

In the Garden
by Charles Austin Miles

Verse 1
I come to the garden alone
While the dew is still on the roses
And the voice I hear, falling on my ear
The Son of God discloses

     Chorus
     And He walks with me
     And He talks with me
And He tells me I am His own
And the joy we share as we tarry there
     None other has ever known

Verse 2
He speaks and the sound of His voice
Is so sweet the birds hush their singing
And the melody that He gave to me
Within my heart is ringing

     (Chorus)

Verse 3
I'd stay in the garden with Him
'Tho the night around me be falling
But He bids me go; through the voice of woe
His voice to me is calling

     (Chorus)

Notes:

FYI, Verse 2 and the following chorus were not recorded because the tape reached the end and flipped over.

Honestly, when this one started I smiled. I thought it was kind of silly - it sounded like a carnival song. It sounded like typical organ "church music". I never remembered Grandpa singing it. I don't remember ever hearing it. I was wondering why he picked it, but then I started to listen to the lyrics. They're simple. The story they tell and the imagery it uses isn't really clear, but the heart is there. Knowing that he picked it, coupled with the minister's "walk vs. talk" remark, helped provide closure for me.
