Lyrics for Track 09: Solo - Amazing Grace (Kalani Brady)
Amazing Grace
by John Newton, others
Amazing grace! (how sweet the sound)
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now I'm found,
Was blind, but now I see.
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear,
The hour I first believed!
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The following verse is not by Newton. It was added to a version of "Amazing Grace" by Harriet Beecher Stowe, as it appears in her novel Uncle Tom's Cabin:
When we've been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We've no less days to sing God's praise
Than when we'd first begun.
Verses not sung:
The Lord has promised good to me,
His word my hope secures;
He will my shield and portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease;
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who call'd me here below,
Will be forever mine.
Notes:
I was weeping through this one. I was done with my part; I didn't need the Spirit to hold me together any longer, so I just let go.
Lyrics from Wikipedia's Amazing Grace page (with a change of "We" to "I"). The melody we know today wasn't written by John Newton, and Newton called it "Faith's review and expectation".
John Newton's story is similar to Paul's in some respects, but also follows the pattern of the "typical" Christian's walk in that he did not stop transporting slaves right away (God often changes our hearts in small increments; He doesn't expect us to suddently become "perfect"). I associate this song with Ralph Moore, who mentioned it (and John Newton's conversion) during a couple services a few years back.
There's a kind of punk/thrash version that I like by Flatfoot 56 (a Christian Celtic punk rock and Oi! band). They just sing the first (twice) and second verses, then a verse of repeated "Praise God!". Their version obviously has an entirely different feel to it (it makes you want to dance).
