Lyrics for Track 02: How Great Thou Art (HYMN 21)
How Great Thou Art
by Carl G. Boberg and Stuart Hine
Verse 1
O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the works/worlds Thy hands have made,
I see the stars, I hear the rolling/mighty thunder,
Thy pow'r thru-out the universe displayed!
Chorus
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee:
How great Thou art, how great Thou art!
Verse 2
When thru the woods and forest glades I wander
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees,
When I look down from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook and feel the gentle breeze,
(Chorus)
Verse 3
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing,
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin!
(Chorus)
Verse 4
When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart!
Then I shall bow in humble adoration
And there proclaim, my God, how great Thou art!
(Chorus)
Notes:
I nearly lost it during this one. I could hear the way Grandpa's voice sounded when he sang this (and other hymns)...
There are some discrepancies between various sites. I looked at Wikipedia's Carl Boberg page (their How Great Thou Art entry is only a disambiguation page) and did some Google searches (Stories Of Great Hymns, How Great Thou Art - Lyrics & History, etc.). I showed some alternatives above because I don't know exactly what was in the hymnal.
This song is aparently also associated with Billy Graham, who Grandpa liked to watch on TV (acording to my mom? I don't remember specifically seeing Grandpa watching him. I think that was in his 70th birthday trivia?). Something else interesting I just learned is that Billy Graham is a Southern Baptist which is (technically) the denomination of our current church (Mountain View Community Church).
I remember Grandpa playing and/or singing "hymn-y" songs when I was little (both at church and at home on his organ)...
